Plug an OBD-II scanner under the dashboard and you will get a string like P0171 or P0301, accompanied by a plain-language description, such as "system too lean, bank 1."
The code confirms only one thing. The computer has measured a value on that specific circuit that falls outside the manufacturer's expected range. It does not tell you why. A "system too lean" error could be caused by a vacuum leak, a clogged injector, a failing fuel pump, a dirty mass airflow sensor, or indeed a faulty oxygen sensor. The sensor reporting the anomaly is very often the messenger rather than the culprit.
Blindly replacing parts is costly here. Replacing a part based solely on a code number means paying a bill for a problem that remains unresolved.
On everyday vehicles, a few categories of problems come up constantly. Misfires are at the top of the list, caused by worn spark plugs, weakening ignition coils, or faulty wires, especially on engines that have exceeded their maintenance interval. Next come oxygen sensors, whose signal drifts with age and skews the air-fuel ratio, which immediately results in higher fuel consumption.
The mass airflow sensor can often be cleaned rather than replaced when dirty. Evaporative emission (EVAP) system leaks, which manage fuel vapors, are also common triggers, and the gas cap is a frequent culprit. The EGR valve gets clogged on cars that primarily make short city trips. As for a catalytic converter losing efficiency, it is rarely the root cause. It is almost always the consequence of an ignition problem left unrepaired.

An OBD-II scanner clears a code in three seconds. The light goes out, but the problem remains.
First, the code comes back. As soon as the system runs its internal test again, the same fault is detected, which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Second, you destroy the history : the freeze-frame data at the time of the fault (RPM, temperature, engine load, fuel trim) allows the technician to reconstruct the exact conditions of the incident, and clearing it is like cleaning up a crime scene before the investigation. Finally, you reset the emissions monitors.
